The Big Plot

It’s your worst neurosis of your life.
It’s the most meaningless conspiracy in history.
It’s a spy fiction about your intimate secrets and personal data over internet.

The Big Plot heet je welkom in Eurasia. Met de woorden van hierboven is een nieuwe “alternate reality game” van start gegaan die zich afspeelt in meer dan zeven steden over verschillende mediakanalen en gebruik maakt van social network sites als Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, BlogSpot, Twitter, MySpace en LinkedIn.

The Big Plot is een spionageverhaal dat zich afspeelt in de infosfeer en waar iedereen aan kan deelnemen. Met het spel willen de makers een inkijk geven in “the role of espionage in intrusions into people’s internet lives, the dysfunctional sociality that is being created by media communications and the political exploitation of social networks.”

“…The Big Plot” will [include] symbolic actions and new signs, and these will be published on Internet with videos, pictures and websites… [it]…will have connections with history and references in literature and in art. It will be a mix of credible elements but it will be at the end a paradoxically parody of new forms of real radical nationalism that it’s raising in all Eurasia. On the fiction side, the reference to novel 1984 of G.Orwell…

Het spel is ontworpen door Paulo Cirio, bekend van onder andere Check Check Reality en van Amazon Noir. In dit laatste kunstproject liet Cirio het spanningsveld zien tussen copyright, hacktivisme en technologie door een bot te programmeren die tot 10.000 requests per boek naar amazon.com zond. Hiermee werden vervolgens 3000 complete boeken gecompileerd die gedownload werden van Amazon.com en vervolgens gedistribueerd werden via P2P. Uiteindelijk kocht Amazon.com de software van de makers om zo hun afgang voor het gerechtshof te voorkomen.
