Boeklancering “Animal Spirits: A Bestiary of the Commons”

Een kleine maand geleden hadden we het boek hier al eens aangekondigd. Nu komen we er nog even op terug, naar aanleiding van de officiële lancering ervan door het Instituut voor Netwerkcultuur.

Over het boek Animal Spirits: A Bestiary of the Commons van Matteo Pasquinelli:

“Na een decennium van digitaal fetisjisme treft het schrikbeeld van de geld- en energiecrisis nu ook de nieuwe mediacultuur en komt de zelfstandigheid van de netwerken op de tocht te staan. Toch prijzen activisten en de kunstwereld de ‘Creative Commons’ en de ‘creatieve steden’ nog altijd aan als het nieuwe ideaal voor de internetgeneratie.

Matteo Pasquinelli ontmaskert het naïeve optimisme van de Commons, en legt de vinger op de voornaamste sociale conflicten en bedrijfsmodellen die werkzaam zijn achter de retoriek van de Free Culture. De economische parasiet die de filesharing netwerken infiltreert, de hydra van de gentrification in ‘creatieve steden’ als Berlijn en de januskop van het internet met zijn pornografische onderwereld zijn drie onvermelde dimensies van de huidige ‘politiek van het gemeenschappelijke’.

Tegenover het latente puritanisme van schrijvers als Baudrillard en Žižek , die door zowel activisten als kunstenaars voortdurend worden geciteerd, vormt Animal Spirits een spiritueel ‘beestenboek’. In een wereld die wordt bepaald door turbulente beursfluctuaties lanceert Pasquinelli een politiek incorrecte grammatica voor de komende genaratie van de nieuwe ‘gemeenschappelijkheid’.”

De boeklancering vindt plaats op dinsdag 20 januari in het Theatrum Anatomicum in de Waag (Amsterdam), met bijdragen van Geert Lovink, Sebastian Olma en Merijn Oudenampsen.

Voorbij het puin van de creatieve stad

Een tekst van Matteo Pasquinelli: “Beyond the ruins of the creative city. Berlin’s factory of culture and the sabotage of rent” (pdf). Geen hapklare brok, maar meer dan de moeite waard om er even de tanden in te zetten.

The literature which promotes the ‘creative cities’ (such as the work of Richard Florida) or denounces their hidden neoliberal agenda and social costs is extensive. This text approaches the ideological construct of the ‘creative city’ (and similar models) from a different angle in order to attempt a reverse engineering of its economic mechanism. Usually both liberal partisans or radical critics of ‘creative economy’ employ a symmetrical paradigm, where the material and the immaterial domains are defended in their autonomy and hegemony against each other. Therefore, the metropolis is respectively described along the urban fabric or the symbolic capital, the good old material economy or the supposedly virtuous economy of ‘creativity’.

On the opposite, this text tries to underline the conflicts, frictions and value asymmetries that occur along the material and immaterial domains; the material accumulation of value triggered by cultural production; the autonomy of the social factory of culture against the skyline of the ‘creative’ cities. Hopefully in this way the invisible motor of the cultural city can be grasped, possibly re-engineered and effectively inverted.

Conceptually, three notions are introduced here. First, the concept of the factory of culture, that is the social production of culture versus the established Creative Industries and the institutional policies of the ‘creative cities’. Second, the profound asymmetries of cultural commons and the accumulation of value between the two layers of symbolic production and material economy (as it happens for instance with gentrification: such conflictive concretions of value can be considered as the very ‘ruins of the Creative City’). Finally, the notion of creative sabotage of creative rent is suggested as a political response to gentrification and exploitation of cultural capital (such a sabotage of value is ‘creative’ as it builds over the financial and real estate ‘ruins‘ and is constitutive of the common).

Kunstenaars en stadsontwikkeling

Onder de titel Landreform organiseert Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum zaterdag 13/12 een avond over “The Artist and Urban Development”. Sprekers zijn Pelin Tan, Andrej Holm en Matteo Pasquinelli.

The land of Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum is in a state urban transformation. Plans for development are on the horizon. Both municipal authorities and private investors have been drawing up ideas for this wasteland, which was once the boundary between East and West Berlin. At our headquarters, we will host a discussion, which looks at the subversive roles artists can play in urban development, with a focus on site-specific strategies. The talk will be led by 3 experts in their field, Pelin Tan, Andrej Holm, and Matteo Pasquinelli. Stepping beyond a discussion purely on urban theory, the talk is intended to develop strategies for artistic practices in areas of urban renewal which are both critical and self-cognizant. The talk will look at actual approaches to art making as well as the residual affects of being an active artist-participant in this landscape.

Binnenkort in de boekhandel: Matteo Pasquinelli: “Animal Spirits. A Bestiary of the Commons”.

Animal Spirits is een bestiarium, een ‘boek der beesten’ over de drijvende krachten achter de digitale economie en de culturele productie. Pasquinelli toont zich kritisch over de euforie rond creative commons en benadert in zijn bestiarium de ‘vrije cultuur’ van de gratis media als een economische parasiet die zich voedt aan de vrije verspreiding van de ‘peer to peer’ netwerken. Ook wordt het beleidsconcept van de ‘creatieve stad’ ontmaskerd. Pasquinelli wijst op de dubbele rol die kunstenaars hierin spelen. De alternatieve kunstscène levert een substantiële bijdrage aan de yuppificatie van lastige achterstandswijken; hun aanwezigheid drijft de huizenprijzen op en uiteindelijk worden de kunstenaars weer naar een ander stadsdeel verdreven. In tegenstelling tot postmoderne ‘ontlichaamde’ theorie, herkent Pasquinelli juist in het dierlijke een goede basis om in tijden van kapitalistische uitbuiting van gemeengoed het tij te keren.
