Pirates of the Amazon (bis)

We komen nog even terug op onze post over Pirates of the Amazon. Op nettime.org staat een interessante reactie op de uitgangspunten van wat de auteurs hun artistiek project noemen. De conclusie die Calin Dan trekt, geldt niet alleen voor Pirates of the Amazon, maar bij uitbreiding voor de hele kunstwereld.

What under-streams all aspects of the discussion till here is the old double standard mentality lurking in our (self)perception as artists and cultural workers: we would like to be autonomous (i.e. free of consequences for our decisions), but also relational (therefore socially efficient), and – of course – vastly accepted. Too bad, as in the end art is neither autonomous nor relational; it is just one of the multitude of human manifestations competing for attention in a surcharged environment.

Pirates of the Amazon

Pirates of the Amazon is/was een plug-in voor Firefox die ervoor zorgde dat bij de producten van webwinkel Amazon automatisch een ‘Download 4 free’-button kwam te staan. Wie op de button klikte, kreeg meteen een link om film, game, softwarepakket of muziekalbum in kwestie gratis te downloaden via The Pirate Bay.

Amper één dag na de publicatie van de plug-in werd de piratensite al gewaarschuwd door het juridisch departement van Amazon. De plug-in werd daarna meteen offline gehaald.

De controversiële plug-in werd gemaakt door een student van de Hogeschool Rotterdam in het kader van een project rond interface, design en informatietoegang. Ontwerper en docent zeggen dat zij zelf niets te maken te hebben met The Pirate Bay. Zij beschouwen de plug-in als een artistieke parodie die de discussie over de herverdeling van intellectueel eigendom op gang wilde brengen.
